03/05/09 : Sekurus International will be participating with a number of motorcycle Clubs in support of the International Thalassaemia Awareness week on the 2nd of May to bring attention to Thalassaemia, an inherited disease of the red blood cells.

In order to express its support, Sekurus will be publishing the GPS trip on http://hog.sekurusinternational.com/  .The trip will start at 6pm from Al Wasel hospital to Jumeirah Beach Residence (JBR) the event this sponsored Ministry of Health.

Basel Al Salah CEO of Sekurus said “There are an estimated 60-80 million people in the world who carry the beta thalassaemia trait alone. We believe that the we need to use a nontraditional means to bring awareness to the general public such an event with more than one Hundred Motorcycles traveling at the smawe time would have a bigger impact then your standard billboard or poster  bring a vast number of the community together”.

The aim of International Thalassaemia Day is to get people talking about the disease and to raise money for research. The campaign will take off from May 2nd to May 8th and will try and reach the largest number of people as possible.
 
For those who may not know, Thalassaemia is a medical disease whereby there is genetic defect in a human body and therefore resulted in a synthesis of an abnormal hemoglobin molecule. If Thalassaemia is controlled and treated naturally like many other diseases, the patients can live comfortably.

Dr Khawla Bel Houl, director of Dubai Thalassaemia Centre said it costs about AED 50,000 to treat one patient.

"This will be our most active community outreach ever," she said.

The Centre has 750 patients and 450 of them are couples who are both carriers.

"We can never stop talking about thalassaemia prevention or we begin to see new cases," she said.
